On 22APR23, the first freighter ever operated by WestJet Cargo, a passenger-to-cargo converted Boeing 737-800F, took to the air. Prior to this memorable event, regulator Transport Canada approved and officially certified the operation of four 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCF). Following certification, WestJet Cargo and its Canadian partner, the GTA Group, put the first aircraft into service to meet the rising market demand of shippers, forwarding agents and individual customers across North America.
In retrospect of the first flight, WestJet Cargo in close cooperation with its Paris, France-based PR Agency, Lemon Queen, produced and launched a video titled “Behind the Inaugural Flight”. This
visual delves into the narrative of the inaugural flight while spotlighting the inspiring testimonials of the team that worked day and night to turn this flight into a reality. Without the great
dedication and commitment of the airline's employees, including their colleagues of partnering GTA Group, the launch of WestJet’s maiden cargo flight would have missed the given timeline.
Capturing the Human Adventure and Resilience of WestJet Cargo
Unforgettable moment
It sure was a touching moment when the inaugural flight of WestJet Cargo's first 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF), took to the air at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ).
Although this took place six months ago, it was an unforgettable event not only for the eyewitnesses but also for the entire WestJet Cargo and GTA teams. The converted Boeing 737-800F took off
from Nova Scotia for Toronto Pearson Airport, carrying lobster shipments on its main deck, bound for the Far East.
This video provides a voice to the teams that contributed to every stage of this voyage. It narrates the testimonials of individuals who worked tirelessly, sharing their experiences, challenges,
and personal successes, and documents the remarkable human commitment behind this and subsequent flights.
Different corporate culture
Whereas usually, at such significant events, VIPs, HONs, CEOs, board members, or politicians are invited to deliver their well-prepared statements, this video offers a contrasting program where
employees have their say. This says a lot about the corporate (grassroots) culture at the participating companies.
Prior to taking to the air, WestJet Cargo had committed to “disrupting the Canadian air cargo sector” with its new freighters. Despite fierce competition, the company has forged dynamic
partnerships and expanded its network, paving the way for new destinations across Canada and beyond.
The video documents a significant chapter in WetJet Cargo’s young history
Ultimately, the market will judge whether WestJet Cargo has delivered on its intention to disrupt the Canadian air cargo sector. Certainly, "Behind the Inaugural Flight" marks a significant
chapter in the airline’s story. It showcases the determination, dedication, and resilience of the team, illustrating how these qualities contributed to the current success and will continue to
shape the company's future.
