The Executive Board of Lufthansa Cargo, consisting of CEO, Ashwin Bhat, and COO, Dietmar Focke, is complete again. Frank Bauer, a former manager at Jade Cargo, has been nominated Chief
Financial Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer. He takes over the position on 01AUG23. The afreight carrier also announced that Nicole Mies will be its new Head of
Communications.
The personnel decision is good news for CEO, Ashwin Bhat and his colleague, Dietmar Focke. While Mr. Bhat will be relieved of the task of interim Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Focke will hand over
labor and staff responsibilities to his new colleague, Frank Bauer. Whether this new allocation of tasks will increase both executives’ free time quota is questionable. After all, the challenges
the carrier is facing are daunting: Here are just four examples: The mounting pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not only in the air, but also on the ground. Declining volumes and
falling rates on most intercontinental trade lanes are another challenge that management must tackle. Possible strikes by pilots of the Lufthansa Group, and thus also Cargo, are looming as well.
And the imminent integration of the Italian carrier, ITA, into the Lufthansa and thus Cargo cosmos will also require strategic and operational attention.
It is therefore helpful to have another experienced executive on board to shoulder some of the managerial tasks listed on the agenda.

Successful career in air freight
Mr. Bauer began his career at Lufthansa in 2007. Three years later, he joined the former Chinese subsidiary, Jade Cargo, in Shenzhen. In 2012, he returned to Deutsche Lufthansa AG and took on
various management positions in the following years. For example, he headed the Lufthansa Group's Internal Audit Department. Subsequently, as a member of the Executive Board of low-cost airline
and Lufthansa Group member, Eurowings, he was responsible for Finance and Human Resources. Most recently, he headed the Controlling and Risk Management of the Lufthansa Group. He knows Cargo
well, because he is a member of the Supervisory Board.
Michael Niggemann, Chief Supervisor of Lufthansa Cargo, welcomed the personnel decision: “Frank Bauer [is] an experienced finance and HR expert with great expertise in the logistics sector
[…] He has proven his management skills in various leadership positions in the Lufthansa Group. The Lufthansa Cargo Executive Board, which is now complete again, will master future challenges
under the leadership of Chairman, Ashwin Bhat and, together with the company's employees, further expand Lufthansa Cargo's global leadership position.”
Leifeld succeeds Bauer
Frank Bauer’s former role as Head of Lufthansa Group’s Controlling and Risk Management will be taken over by Christian Leifeld. He started his career in 2003 at McKinsey, founded the start-up
InterNations (meanwhile part of Ne Work SE), and held numerous management positions at energy supplier E.ON.
Update
Today (10JUL23), Lufthansa Cargo announced internally the appointment of Nicole Mies as successor of Jacqueline Casini as Head of Communications & Corporate Responsibility. Currently, Nicole is Head of Customer Strategy at Deutsche Lufthansa. She'll take on her new function at the cargo carrier next Saturday (15JUL23).

Lufthansa Cargo adds fire resistant containers to its ULD fleet
In a separate release, Lufthansa Cargo announced that it has become Jettainer’s first customer to operate fire-resistant AMX airfreight containers. Lufthansa Cargo subsidiary, Jettainer provided
its parent company with 50 of the containers for this purpose since the beginning of JUN23. The ULD manager sources these containers from the American manufacturer, Satco Inc.
These fire-resistant containers (FRCs) are certified in accordance with the latest Technical Standard Orders (TSO) C90e specifications defined by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). They can
contain a fire for up to six hours, making them the safest certified ULDs on the market.
