Digitalization delivers data which in turn delivers efficiency and discloses areas for improvement. Lödige Industries has started the year with the intention to maximize on both. It has joined Cargo iQ as a handling solutions expert member on the one hand, and secured a contract to furnish Cainiao’s Smart Gateway in Hong Kong with a smart handling system, on the other.
Lödige Industries’ Director Air Cargo, Björn Ussat, has been nominated as Lödige's official representative in cooperation with Cargo iQ. Lödige has supported a variety of air cargo industry stakeholders over the past five decades, and therefore brings a great deal of experience when it comes to providing Cargo iQ with insights into logistics systems and material handling solutions for the global airport, warehouse, and production industries. He says: “We believe the industry is at a tipping point for change, with the digitalization we have long talked about really taking place and driving change. We believe Cargo iQ is an excellent platform for these discussions and for furthering innovation in the air cargo industry. As further standardization of KPIs in the industry develops, we are looking forward to learning and contributing to key conversations from a technical provider's point of view.”

Driving digitalization in 2023
The aim of Lödige’s Cargo iQ membership, is to help drive new standards in air cargo terminal handling operations within the air cargo industry. Lothar Moehle, Executive Director of the air
freight quality standards group, Cargo iQ, welcomes Lödige Industries with open arms: “By joining the Cargo iQ community, Lödige has pledged its commitment to our mission to drive quality and
standardization in the movement of cargo by air. The Lödige team will offer a valuable new perspective to important conversations and will help drive progress in establishing industry-wide
standards and processes to bring long-lasting improvements to supply chain visibility.” Lödige will help strengthen Cargo iQ's ability to deliver guidance and recommendations in air cargo
handling best practice.
A Smart Gateway later this year
Hong Kong’s third largest logistics center is due to open this year. It belongs to Cainiao, Alibaba's logistics arm, and will be equipped with a smart material handling system provided by Lödige
Industries. The Cainiao Smart Gateway, as it is called, is located at Hong Kong’s International Airport. It will provide warehousing and distribution services under the Alibaba electronic World
Trade Platform (eWTP) – a tool designed to facilitate global trade for international businesses and consumers by lowering trade barriers and providing more equitable access. The Smart Gateway in
Hong Kong is a key cog in Cainiao's network, connecting to its regional eHubs and providing extensive global reach and fast deliveries. For this to work, the Gateway requires efficient handling
solutions, and Lödige Industries has been commissioned to provide a respective automated handling system for Cainiao Smart Gateway. The innovative air cargo handling system for the receipt,
delivery, storage, retrieval, transshipment, and sorting of air cargo, should be operational in the third quarter of this year.
Nicholas Tripptree, Managing Director for Lödige Industries in Asia Pacific, commented on the Cainiao project: “The pandemic has enhanced dynamism in the e-commerce landscape across countries
and long-standing consumer behaviors have been forever changed. The logistics centers and warehouses are becoming engines of the supply chain. Therefore, we understand the unique pressures
e-commerce operations face and we are very pleased that we can support in achieving its goals with automation solutions from Lödige Industries to ensure processes are streamlined while
productivity and efficiency remain high.”
