The Franco-Dutch freight carrier has taken a further step to tackle climate change and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, fully in line with a recent ICAO decision (CargoForwarder reported). Beginning immediately, customers can set the level of their personal contribution to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for every cargo shipment they book, the capacity provider announces.

“United we stand, divided we fall” is a phrase mostly used in sports, to inspire unity, determination, and collaboration. AF-KLM-MP Cargo is apparently also guided by this motto in its goSAF
initiative. True to the credo: The more customers can be attracted to the program, the greater its success – which translates into turning the skies a little greener with every consignment flown
under the goSAF label. The offer could ignite growing demand among small and mid-sized forwarding agents for clean air transport, since SAF shipments tend to become a sales argument. This all the
more so since AF-KLM-MP Cargo places great importance on individualization, recognizing that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' solution. It is also important for participants to emphasize their
environmental commitment through participation in the program, which has a positive impact on their reputation.
Customers can choose from four contribution levels
Transparency is provided by a CO₂ emissions calculator which determines the expected CO₂ emissions of a given shipment and calculates the costs of compensating for this by investing in the
purchase of SAF. Clients booking their consignments using the myCargo booking portal, can set the level of their contribution to SAF for every single shipment. The tool offers four different
contribution levels, giving customers a choice of proportionally reducing their CO₂ emissions.
GertJan Roelands, Senior Vice President Sales & Distribution, explains: “When our customers decide to contribute to SAF, they not only reduce the CO₂ emissions of their own shipments, but
also contribute to more sustainable supply chains for their customers, and help them and the broader cargo industry to reduce impact on the environment. By working together and gradually
increasing the percentage of SAF used to power every flight, we can really make a difference in achieving a more sustainable airfreight industry.”
40 partners and growing
AF-KLM-MP’s goSAF offer is the carrier’s next step following the introduction of its customer-oriented SAF program, launched in 2020.
Up to now, the program has welcomed 40 partners. In 2022, AF-KLM-MP Cargo took the initiative to add a standard percentage of SAF (0.5%-1%) to all flights departing from Paris Charles de Gaulle
and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Although this percentage may seem tiny, it is an important step in the right direction, the company emphasizes in a release. AF-KLM-MP Cargo will continue to
cooperate with industry partners in seeking ingenious solutions and innovations to promote the use and accelerate the production of SAF.
All SAF investments pay for more SAF
The carrier assures that all investments in sustainable aviation fuel – whether they be via AF-KLM-MP Cargo’s SAF program or via goSAF – will be fully utilized to purchase more SAF. The freight
airline does not profit from this financially in any way. As is the case for participants in its SAF program, customers who contribute via goSAF receive a report with an overview of the
calculated CO₂ reduction thanks to their investments.
