The company is in final preparation for the opening of a new air cargo hub at Leipzig Airport. It is the second facility run by GEORGI, which also operates a large warehouse in Frankfurt
Airport’s Cargo City South.
The Leipzig move illustrates the company's transformation from a former trucking company to a full-service logistics provider: A development that has been consistently pursued by the
management, following a strategic shift in 2018 aimed at broadening the product portfolio.
Whenever driving on highways in Central Europe, in Scandinavia, Italy or the UK, one will encounter the typical white and black/grey/yellow-colored trucks bearing the name “GEORGI Transporte”. A common sight, because the company, founded back in 1953 by Siegfried Georgi, is one of the oldest and also best known in the European air cargo landscape, offering mainly airlines and forwarders a broad product mix in addition to road feeder services, including air cargo handling, customs documentation, and security controls.
Ground handling was added to RFS
All in all, the Georgi Group deploys 400+ trucks and employs more than 850 staff, including administrative people. Lately, the product portfolio has been constantly enlarged.
In May (!!), the group transported and handled 140,000 tons of air freight in a single month. That is a more than 20% increase compared to May 2020. And the “rest” of the current year looks rosy
as well, states Christian Georgi, Head of Sales, son of CEO Jürgen Georgi, and grandson of founder Siegfried.
New customers on the hook
Reason enough to ask Christian why the Saxon Airport was chosen as site for a second freight terminal by his company and not Cologne, Liege, Amsterdam, or Paris, for example? Airports with high
cargo turnover his trucking fleet constantly serves:
“Leipzig is constantly growing, with a sound business outlook and potential. Our Network products already cover handling services at all European airports with our local partners. Managed by
our network control tower, we ensure service levels and data availability. Our new warehouse is a great fit to this, as one of our customers is doing actually a lot of business in Leipzig on
whose behalf we transport, handle, and distribute many shipments all across Europe. It will provide additional service and support,” he reasons.
It is not hard to guess that this applies to the members of the DHL Group which operates its largest global hub at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The transport assortment trucked and handled by GEORGI,
includes all products, besides the e-commerce segment also pharma, DG or general cargo.
Everything from a single source
With facilities such as the air cargo handling hub, coupled with the company's step to becoming a full-service provider that manages the entire supply chain from a single source, GEORGI has
become an interesting logistics player for the air cargo industry. This is evidenced by the growing number of customers, says the manager. “In Leipzig, we are already in detailed discussion
with several clients to provide our handling and transport services, but also to enhance our Aerospace and AOG services for the industry,” he emphasizes.
The first 5,000 m² phase of the cargo hub, which will be equipped with a customs bonded area, material handling systems, and a screening unit, is scheduled to open on the 01AUG21.
