Frankfurt-Hahn Airport starts marketing offensive

Christoph Goetzmann, Managing Director of Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HNA) told CargoForwarder Global during the Caspian Cargo Summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 8-9 October, that Hahn’s management has launched a marketing campaign promoting the airport as the 5th runway of Frankfurt Main Airport, located roughly 120 km west of HHN.

“In contrast to Rhine-Main, there is no night flight ban in Hahn, but 24/7/365 accessibility,” Mr Goetzmann mentions as a main differentiator. Further to this, he points out that there are no slot restrictions and the airport’s 3,800-meter runway can accommodate even the largest freighter aircraft. Additionally, the low-complexity at Frankfurt-Hahn means fast ground processes. These benefits are highlighted in the advertising campaign to let more forwarders and shippers know the advantages of processing their imports and exports via Hahn Airport, thus circumventing congested airports and getting their goods airborne as fast as possible.

Orchestrating onward transportation
“Our marketing concept targets non-EU airlines requiring support when it comes to the distribution of their e-commerce shipments across Europe,” Mr Goetzmann states. As an illustrative example, he mentions the onward transportation of a 600 kg import shipment from Hahn to Bergamo in northern Italy, where the final consignee is based. In case of such consignments, “we offer carriers operating to our airport to orchestrate the road feeder traffic, including all formalities such as customs clearance, documentation, and other formalities involved.” It’s an additional service “making our airport even more attractive for carriers, enabling them to concentrate on their core business, flying goods from A to B or from A via B to C.”

Major expansion of the campaign planned
The cargo executive admits that the concept is still in its infancy but has been tentatively launched and will be expanded massively in the coming months. Hahn’s CEO, Anson Fan, fully supports this new marketing campaign as he assured CargoForwarder Global at the Baku-held Caspian Air Cargo Summit.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport belongs to the Chinese HNA conglomerate since 2017. On average, about 30 freighter flights per week stand in the airport’s books. Their largest single customer by tonnage or volumes is the Azeri carrier Silkway West Airlines, that operates five B747-400F /-8F flights per week between Hahn and their home base Baku, Azerbaijan.
Recently, Chinese carrier SF Airlines started serving Hahn as well, connecting the airport 3 times weekly with Wuxi in China’s Jiangsu province, mainly driven by E-commerce demand.

Marketing is a good idea as Long as the product behind is meeting the requirements. This is my marketing approach as a provider of Ground Support Equipment in relation the HHN offensive.
