Lighting up a cargo warehouse can be an expensive business especially when it’s a large one, as is the case with Fraport Cargo Services (FCS) premises at Frankfurt Airport.
The wholly owned subsidiary of Fraport AG has come up with what they feel is the ideal solution to save power costs and present their warehouse in a “new light.”
FCS has invested in an innovative LED Lighting Technology which they claim will save considerable cost and give a far better working environment in the warehouse.
The LED (Light Emitting Diode) system was introduced in stages and was completed for the whole warehouse by the end of September this year.
This process involved the replacement of a total of 437 large lamps.
Frankfurt’s largest air cargo handler states that even after retrofitting the first half of the warehouse, that there were noticeable improvements in lighting and working conditions for the
staff.
This is mainly due to the LED light characteristics which do not radiate heat in the form of ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) rays.
LED lights become more popular
It is well known by now that LED lighting for homes and offices is well on the way to taking over from conventional lighting systems.
The initial investment for installing such LED systems may seem high, but compared to the far longer life cycles of LED lamps and the drastic reduction in power costs, this is seen as a long term
saving all round.
Fraport also claims that there has been no trade off in terms of reduced illumination in the warehouse. They state that after having measured brightness levels on the warehouse floor that it was
clear that the minimum requirements under German law have been more than required by the state.
Enhancing working conditions and environmental improvements
Making working conditions for staff better, leads to more work satisfaction.
This, FCS claims, has been achieved due to the fact that the red, green and blue color components in the light spectrum of LED lighting is somewhat similar to sunlight. This, they claim, has made
working conditions more conducive for the FCS staff and in their words “enhances the ability to concentrate on the task at hand.”
This also leads to an added benefit for work safety.
The environmental improvements through the installation of LED lighting are well known and FCS states that the entire investment cost can be paid off within three years thanks to the energy
savings and much lower maintenance costs.
